Life Changes

Your Daddy and I, after years of careful prayer, consideration, and trying, have made a very big decision.

We are moving to Dothan.

It's so funny to say that.  My entire life, I could not wait to get away from there.  I thought it was boring, too small, too close knit.  I didn't like going to Wal-Mart and seeing fifteen people that I knew.  I didn't like that it only took fifteen minutes to go from one side of town to the other.  I didn't like that the only sources of entertainment in high school were a miniature golf course and field parties.  There was no Target there when I was in high school.  There is still no free standing Starbucks.  And for pete's sake, the biggest event of the year is a festival about a peanut.

I always said, "When I get older, I'm moving to Birmingham."  Now, Birmingham to most of the country would seem rather insignificant.  But to a person from Dothan, moving to Birmingham is like moving to New York City.  There's lots of people.  Two giant malls.  Nightlife.  Suburbs.  Concerts.  AN INTERSTATE.

All things Dothan doesn't have.  Dothan is slow.  It's pokey.  Chain stores and restaurants are replaced with fast food joints and family owned restaurants.  Whenever someone finds out where you grew up, they ask if you know so-and-so.  Chances are, you probably do.  Or you know their cousin.

But probably a year after Your Daddy and I got married, I got really homesick.  I missed that pokey little town after being gone for several years.  I missed my friends that I grew up with.  I missed being close to my mother.  I missed my church.  And I missed Mama Rosa's.

So we tried to make a move work then.  Your Daddy applied with the Dothan Police Department way back when he was applying for all sorts of police departments.  He tested, but he wasn't hired.  They didn't hire anyone.

We were quite disappointed.  I was SURE that I was hearing from God that Dothan is where we were supposed to be.  I was SURE that this was going to happen.  I cried like crazy when we found out we weren't moving.  Had I heard wrong?

So he accepted the job with Birmingham, and we moved on with our life, thinking that this is where we would be.

And it's fine!  I love Birmingham.  It is a beautiful city.  We have lots of friends here.  Your Daddy grew up here.  Your GranBren is here.  We have everything that we need at our fingertips.  I enjoyed my job, we had purchased a home, Ben was hired with the BPD and was really looking forward to fulfilling his dream of becoming an officer.

And then we got pregnant.  You were on your way.  And Your Daddy and I both realized that we wanted to give you a different kind of home than what we would give you here in Birmingham.

We would never be able to afford to live in the area we would want to be in here in Birmingham - an area that would provide you with the best schools and you would grow up with the same group of friends your whole life.  We would never be able to afford one very big thing that Your Daddy and I both feel very strongly about - me staying home to be your mommy full time.  It also doesn't hurt that Your GiGi lives there.

Dothan would provide us with those opportunities.

So Your Daddy waited until hiring began at Dothan in December, filled out his application, and we waited.

It wasn't long before he got the phone call to come in for the physical test, and the written test, and all the other parts of the hiring process.  Since he is already a certified officer, the hiring is relatively easy.

The day Your Daddy left for the test, we prayed together, like we always do.  We prayed that if Dothan is where we are supposed to be, that God would make it happen.  Everything with finances, the house, the jobs, and the move would fall into place.  We laid it down.

And boy, did God answer that prayer.

We thought at first that we would sell the house, so we put it on the market as a short sale.  Nothing happened.  So I took a risk and listed it on Craigslist as a rental.  Within five minutes, I received a response from a couple in South Dakota who were originally from the area and wanted to move back.  Our house was the perfect size, the perfect price, the perfect place, and would take their two fur babies.  And she told me they wanted to move in April.

We already knew that Your Daddy was beginning work with Dothan on April 1.

We decided after we move that I will stay at home with you instead of working full time. On a police officer's salary, this is going to be tough.  But I have had several people ask for me to do some contract design/web/marketing work for them from home.  And then I scored a brand new computer that will do everything I need it to do for a quarter of it's regular price.

We looked at several rental houses in Dothan, none of which felt quite right.  A lot of them were out of our price range, wouldn't take Charlotte, or were kinda gross.  There was one that we loved the house, but the area was a little questionable.  So Your GiGi (who doesn't usually butt in to our affairs much...she made an exception for this time) visited an apartment complex for us.  She found out that they had a three bedroom apartment coming available April 1, they would allow us to have Charlotte, the rent was in our budget, and they are needing a Courtesy Officer to help with the office.

GiGi put the deposit down for us that day.

So then I began to freak out about moving.  We were estimating costs with moving companies and rental trucks, and we just couldn't afford it.  I didn't know how we would move a whole house full of furniture and stuff to Dothan.  So Your GiGi was just talking to a friend at church about us needing help moving and with a truck.  Someone behind her said, "What do you need trucks for?  I have trucks."

Timing with Your Daddy's job and my job fell right into place.  Timing with Mrs. Maegan worked out to almost exactly a year of you being at her house.  Your Daddy is already there, and I am finishing out the week of work before we move this weekend.

Everything is perfect.  There has never been a clearer sign of what we are supposed to do.

So you, my dear sweet girl, will grow up in my hometown.  You will go to the church I grew up in.  My friends' children will be your friends.

And then when you are sixteen, you will be saying, "I can't wait to move away from Dothan."  But just a short ten years, a marriage, and a kid later, you will be dying to come back.

Because this town gets in your soul.  And you realize how nice it is to see a familiar face everywhere that you go.  To see the Samaras every Sunday at Mama Rosa's.  To know the dark and scary corners of your church that you hide in while Your Mommy is at choir practice.  To drive past landmarks and tell your husband all the different things about them.  To remember what that hill looked like before Target and Moe's were there.  To know what downtown looked like before they began to restore it.  To remember the murals being painted on the sides of buildings or fiberglass peanuts going up around local businesses, thinking it was a little bit nuts, and then seeing just how gorgeous and special they are.  Knowing when the farmers begin to turn the peanuts because the air smells different.  Hanging out on a truck tailgate with a bonfire.  Friday nights at the ballfield and Saturdays at the mall.  Armband night at the Peanut Festival.  Larry's BBQ, Dante's, and Hunt's.

Life changes.  Wants change.  Needs change.  Hearts change.

I can't wait to be there.

Your SECOND Easter

With this past weekend's Easter holiday, we have officially begun your second set of holidays.

Last Easter, you were three weeks old and it was your first Sunday at church.
I can't remember you being that tiny.  So crazy.

Now you are a big girl!

This Easter, we went to Dothan to take care of some important business, and to spend the weekend with GiGi.

You had toast and peanut butter...hehe...

GiGi had to go to rehearsal at church, so Your Daddy and I took you to the mall to do some window shopping until GiGi was ready to meet us.  You're such a good shopper.

We had lunch, ran some errands, and then went to Target to fill up your Easter basket with goodies!  You tried on this hat to see if it might look good with your Easter dress.  We were right.  It didn't.

Sunday morning, you woke up to see your Easter basket(s)!  You got several new books, including a bedtime prayer book, a ballerina bunny, and a new sippy cup!  You were very excited!

I was a bad Easter bunny and waited until Saturday night to get things for your basket.  There weren't many stuffed bunnies left!  But we found a sweet little ballerina bunny sitting all by her lonesome...

Mommy and Daddy got presents from the Easter bunny too...chocolate!

After looking at our Easter baskets, we got ready for church.  We AMAZINGLY made it there on time, and were able to get a few pictures with GiGi before the service.

It was a wonderful service - full of singing, rejoicing, and praising because our Savior LIVES!

After church, we took a few more pictures outside at GiGi's house.

You were absolutely precious in your Easter dress (that we bought at Kid's Market for $7!).  You just really didn't want to show us.  You knew that the rocking chair is supposed to rock, so you kept leaning forward, trying to get it to move.

Mr. Woody and Mrs. Patty invited us for Easter lunch at their house.  The Easter bunny even visited there for you!

I absolutely love this picture.

We had a delicious lunch of ham, sweet potato casserole, mac n cheese, green beans, and much more.  I made orange jello salad (orangello salad, as Your Daddy calls it).  It was super yummy!  You really loved the sweet potato casserole and the mac n cheese.

After lunch, we came back to GiGi's house for naps.  You woke up from your nap before Your Daddy and I woke up from ours, so you played in the floor with GiGi for a while, reading your new books and playing with Mr. Mouse.

Then you and I had to head back to Birmingham.  Why not Daddy?  Because he stayed with GiGi while he began his new job with the Dothan Police!  YES!  We are moving to Dothan!

That's another post entirely...

Your First Birthday Party

We had your First Birthday Party on Saturday.

Because I call you "Sweet Girl" so much, we decided to have a "sweets" theme!
Plus, I just really wanted an excuse to eat candy.

Your GiGi and I worked hard to plan the perfect party for you!  Your GranBren (formerly known as Dollie...hehe...) so graciously allowed us to have the party at her house.  It's the perfect house for entertaining, and our house just isn't big enough.

Your PawPaul and Your Nanny and DaddyJohn came all the way from Mississippi for your party!

We created a candy bar with lots of delicious treats - cupcakes, chocolate covered pretzels, gummies, gum balls, chocolate covered sunflower seeds, marshmallow pops, and sugar cookie lollipops. Each guest was able to make a bag of sweets to take home with them for a favor.

Your Gigi and Your Nanny helped me by decorating with the candy pieces on the railing, and finding the perfect spots for decorations and presents.

You wore your adorable First Birthday outfit again.  I ordered the onesie on Etsy and the tutu was the same tutu you wore in your newborn photos - it just actually fits now!

You had lots of friends come to your party.
Noah, Johanna, Abel, Chloe Belle, and Lily...who didn't want to take a picture.

We opened presents first.  You were given basically your whole summer wardrobe!  What a blessing!  You also got several new toys, stuffed animals, and an awesome new wagon from GranBren!  You also got a sweet red rocker from Pop.  You sat in it like a big girl when opening your presents.

After presents, it was time for cupcakes (we did cupcakes rather than a big cake).  I made funfetti cupcakes with cream cheese icing - my favorite!

You seemed to enjoy it too!  You thoroughly surprised me with the cake smash.  You didn't eat any of the cake really, but you loved playing with the icing.

Of course, you had to stop for a sippy cup break.

After your cake smash, your friends all left.  And it was time for a bath!  There was cake everywhere!

While the girls helped me clean up the party, DaddyJohn took you for rides in your new wagon.  What a great gift, GranBren!

We had such a wonderful day celebrating you.  I can't believe you are one year old.  Time has flown by, and I can't wait for so many more of your parties!

ONE YEAR OLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You are now ONE YEAR OLD.

I can't believe it.

I didn't get a picture of you with a birthday sign last night because you were too busy playing and I was too busy birthday crafting.  So maybe tonight we'll get one!  We've already had your official first birthday portraits made, so I'm not really worried about it.

In your twelfth month...

You took a bubble bath for the first time...
and then proceeded to eat the bubbles.  You only tasted them three times before you decided not to do that anymore.

We had your first birthday portraits made!
You were so adorable, even though you wanted nothing to do with the cupcake smash.  You raked your fingers through the frosting, then looked at your hands like, "Now what?"  You tasted it after about five minutes of playing with it, and then didn't try it anymore.
I have no hope for a cake smash at your birthday party this weekend.

More crawling practice.  You still don't care.  You'll get up on all fours and rock, and then scoot backwards.  Going forward just really isn't an option.

I got the flu, so I spent about a week with you at home.  We shared a pot (I separated out your portion before I ate mine) of Italian wedding soup...which you LOVED.  Especially the meatballs.

I was so glad that neither you nor Your Daddy got the flu that I had.  I was miserable.  Luckily, Your Dollie took you for one evening so I could rest while Your Daddy was at work.

We went to Dothan for the weekend to take care of some important business.  You played with Your GiGi a lot.

You also have a new trick.  You love DaDa.  You talk about him all the time.  Even when I ask, "Can you say MaMa?"  You say, "DaDa!"

Then, I got us all packed up for your first trip to Washington DC to see your Uncle Wes and Aunt Dervon!

Your first flight was great.  You did really well.  No problems with ears.

We brought plenty of toys to keep you occupied, but you especially loved looking at the clouds with GiGi.

We were there for a party in honor of Uncle Wes and Aunt Dervon's wedding last year.  They didn't have a big wedding, just a Justice of the Peace ceremony, so they've been having parties throughout the year to celebrate.  We threw them one in Dothan in the fall, and this was their party for all of Dervon's family and their DC friends to join us!

On Saturday, we went to the Jefferson Memorial, which we had never been to!

It was quite chilly, so you had to have a new hat.

You love playing with Uncle Wes.  You think he is funny!

Then, we went back to the hotel to rest before dinner, but you wanted no part in napping.

That night for dinner, Dervon's brother held a private party for all the guests at the Wok and Roll, a sushi/karaoke place in Chinatown!

You LOVE karaoke.  This is you and Dervon's niece, Ayla, dancing to the music.

On Sunday morning, we took a brunch cruise on the Odyssey, which sails down the Potomac River.
We had such a good time with Dervon's family.  They were so gracious, and a lot like our family, just all speaking Chinese!
You sacked out on the cruise from all the fun.

After brunch, we all went next door to Cantina Marina, where Uncle Wes is a manager.

After another afternoon of no naps, Your GiGi and I decided we wanted to get out of the hotel and go get something yummy to eat, so we went back to Chinatown to one of our favorite restaurants, Matchbox.

You had cheese pizza and thought it was awesome.

And of course we had to stop for cupcakes.

On Monday, we had lunch with Uncle Wes, Aunt Dervon, and Dervon's mother and brother's family.  We ate at one of Uncle Wes' favorite restaurants, Zatinya, which is a Greek tapas restaurant.
You really enjoyed the roasted cauliflower, hummus, and cucumber salad.

Then we had to head back.

The flight home was not as good because you were sooooo tired.  We had a slight delay because of weather, and we were already on the plane, so Your GiGi and I had to be creative in the ways we entertained you...and ourselves...
But we made it!
And a special shout out to one of your "Aunties" at Mom's school - Shaney.  She has been so gracious in handing down a lot of baby items from her daughter, Kennedy.  We would not have survived this trip without the Ergo that she gave us!  THANK YOU, AUNTIE SHANEY!

And now here we are, the day after your first birthday.  Two days before your first birthday party.  We are so looking forward to your "sweet" birthday party!  I have been making lots of preparations and Your GiGi is coming back tomorrow night to help with the final stuff before Saturday morning!

I cannot believe this year has gone by so quickly.  Wasn't it just yesterday that we were in the hospital and I was holding you for the first time?
