Blessed Assurance

Heaven gained another hero a few months ago.

My Granddaddy.

Hero is not a word that my Granddaddy took lightly. In fact, he hated being called a hero. Granddaddy, known to others as William (Bill) Leon Benson, Sr., dropped out of high school to be drafted into the United States Navy in World War II. He served in the European theatre in several major battles. Two of those were Operation Tiger and D-Day.

You all know what D-Day is, but you've probably never heard of Operation Tiger. That's because it was classified for many years. It was a practice drill for D-Day, and it took place on Slapton Sands off the coast of England. During this drill, they were attacked by German U-Boats. All the deaths of that day are attributed to D-Day, in fear that D-Day would fail if information was released.

Granddaddy survived both.

We knew nothing of his time at war for years. All we knew was that he was a cook in the Navy somewhere in Europe. He never spoke about what he experienced, until the movie Saving Private Ryan came out. That's when he told us, "I was there."

His job with the Navy was the drive the landing craft onto the beach to release the soldiers.

He only had to make one pass onto Omaha Beach.

He said the movie depicted it perfectly. Men lying motionless in the water, clogging the beach to where the landing crafts couldn't even reach the shore. Soldiers having to jump out of the boat in hopes to reach the shore, but being dragged under because of the weight of their packs and the tide. The first line of men never making it off the boat because they were mowed down by German machine gun fire after the doors were let down.

Granddaddy always said, "The water was red. Red with American blood."

Granddaddy saw this with his own eyes. Even until his last days, he would have nightmares about these experiences - hearing the men screaming, seeing them in the water, and he was helpless to save them.

It is because of these men that Granddaddy did not like to be called a hero. He said those who died on those days, and all throughout the war, were the heroes. He was just another man, doing his duty to his country.

We, of course, feel differently.

Granddaddy is a hero because he came back. He lived to tell the stories of these thousands of men whose lives are often forgotten from a war that is often forgotten. He wept every time the National Anthem was played or he saw the flag raised. He believed in that flag and in those words and he had lived it out. He is a hero because he spent many sleepless nights weeping for their pain and praying for their families.

And thanking God that he was fortunate enough to return to build a life for his family in the country he loved so much.

After the war, he married my Grandmother, who he had fussed and fought with through the mail the entire time he was gone. They met before he was drafted at a scrap metal drive at the local high school. He liked to tell people "she was the best piece of scrap I found all day."

Somehow or another, she got mad at him while he was gone, and burned all his letters from war. We will never know why they were fussing, or the sweet things that he said to make up for it in those letters.

They married quickly, and then had babies quickly. My Aunt Pug (Sharon) came just a little over 9 months after their wedding day, and my Uncle Billy, just a little over a year later. It was nine more years until my mom came along.

Grandmother told me last week nobody told her how to prevent things. All three babies were accidental blessings.

Their children blessed them with six grandchildren, five grandchildren-in-laws, seven great-grandchildren, two great-great granchildren, one great-grandchild with him in Heaven, and our sweet little girl on the way.

Granddaddy told my husband before we got married that we didn't have in-laws in this family. We are all family. Once you're in, you're in.

Then he told Ben in a very quiet voice, "And if you hurt my grandbaby, you'll have to answer to Granddaddy." Even though he was quite feeble at the time, I think he meant it.

We all had a different relationship with Granddaddy, but ours was extra special. It's probably because I'm the favorite. :) I am the youngest grandchild. For a very long time, I was the baby in the family.

I spent countless hours on Granddaddy's "good" knee (the other had shrapnel in it from the war) while he told me stories, played Ride a Little Horsey, and singing his favorite song, Little Boy Blue.

Little Boy Blue was a song I'm pretty sure he made up and it had eleventy billion verses that were different every time. I was not allowed to get up until he decided he was finished.

His chair was always in the same place, and he was guaranteed to be there working crossword puzzles, reading the paper, or watching the Braves. Every time I walked behind his chair, I would mess up his hair (what little was there) or give him a kiss on the top of his head. It always made him grin and say, "I love you, baby."
I am going to miss him now every time I walk by that chair. I will miss going to their house and getting a big bear hug from him as a greeting. I will miss the way he picked at Grandmother until she got so frustrated with him that she threw up her hands. Then he would grin at us like a little boy. I will miss the way his voice got low when the conversation turned to something serious. I will miss the way he beamed when watching his grandchildren play or holding a new grandbaby for the first time. I will miss hearing him get choked up while saying the prayer before meals at family gatherings as he spoke of the loved ones who aren't here with us.

But praise God for blessed assurance. I know without a shadow of a doubt where my Granddaddy's faith stood. He spoke of the love of his Savior often. He was the faith leader of our family. He attended his church every Sunday, and when his body would no longer allow him to, he would listen to church on the radio, or watch it on his little TV that sat by his chair. When my mother was little, he would have her bring a hymnal to him, and she would sit on the arm of his chair, and he would sing her hymn after hymn.

I know today he is where he longed to be for several years since his health began to deteriorate. He is with his Savior. He is singing those hymns with the angels. He is having long conversations with my Dad. He is playing with our sweet Allie. He is walking on able legs, seeing with able eyes, and breathing with able lungs.

And he is waiting on the rest of us to join him.

Baby P - Week 16

I missed last week of Baby P update. Whoops.

Crazy week. I went to Dothan last weekend for the Miss National Peanut Festival Pageant. (Call me crazy if you'd like, but it's like Miss America down there...)

During the pageant, we gave a scholarship in honor of my friend, Brittany, who was killed in a car accident in March with her son, Shep. You can read about that here. The whole pageant was a beautiful tribute to Brittany, and the scholarship went to a girl who was truly deserving.

I drove back to Birmingham Sunday night. As soon as I walked in the door, Mom called Ben, hoping to catch him before I came home, but I was already there.

She was calling to tell me my Granddaddy died.

Granddaddy and I had a very special relationship, and I will miss him greatly. But I can smile knowing he is no longer in pain and that he is in Heaven, rejoicing with the angels.

I will post something about Granddaddy later. The real reason for this post is a Baby P update!

How far along? 16 weeks. Baby P is the size of an avocado! And it's growing eardrums, so it can hear me talking! I guess I need to watch my language...Although, I imagine to Baby P that it sounds like Charlie Brown adult talk - Wahp wahp wahp.

Baby Bump? Totally there. No hiding it. I don't even try anymore. It's not big, but it just can't be covered up.

Maternity Clothes? Yep. Greatest invention to known to WOman.

Total weight gain: 10 pounds. 10 POUNDS! Everyone keeps saying they can't see it anywhere but my belly, but Mom and I did notice it in my face in pictures. Doc says I'm right on track on weight gain and that I look good.

Cravings: Sushi. And I got some last night. Ben turned up his nose when he asked me what I wanted for dinner, but then it dawned on him that we could go to Sumo and he could eat hibachi chicken, and he was ok with that.

*side note* - Totally embarrassed him at Sumo. The waitress asked me what I wanted, and I ordered my Super Crunch Roll (it's all cooked, not raw...don't freak out!). And then I asked if I could have the rice, too. She says, "Sure, but it will be a little extra."

I said, "That's fine. Can I have the noodles too?"

Her eyes got REALLY big, and said, "I mean...I guess."

I said, "I'm sorry. I'm just pregnant and I want to eat."

And I did. I ate it all. I ate more than Ben.

Symptoms: The headaches have gotten better, but now I'm into the sore back and leg cramps.

Sleep: Off and on. I wake up around 2am for no reason.

Movement: I think some flutters. I've got an allergy something going on, and every time I sneeze, I get little bubbles in my tummy. It's like the baby is saying, "Bless you!"

Gender: Still feeling like it's a girl. We'll find out if we're right on October 29th!

Belly Button in or out? In. Although some random lady at Granddaddy's funeral touched my belly and told me I would have an outie before it was over with.

BACK UP OFF MY BELLY, UNLESS YOU'RE RELATED TO ME.

What I miss: Having a somewhat flat belly. I'm still terrified that people just think I'm fat. You know those people who wear really tight shirts and their flat tire hangs over their pants? I don't want to look like that person.

Best moment this week: I got to hear that sweet heartbeat again yesterday at the doctor! Still a feisty one - over 160 every time!

Welcome to Atlanta

Last Friday afternoon, I took a partial day at work so Mom and I could go to Atlanta for our annual Mom-Daughter time.

We went here...

...to see this...

...which was unbelievably amazing.

Afterwards, we had dessert here, where Mom left her souvenir program book underneath the seat and we're positive somebody kept it.

Then, on Saturday, we went here. I bought a frying pan and cinnamon rolls, and found the bookcase for Baby P's nursery, that Ben and I will go back and get some other Saturday. Big box.

Then we went here, to Atlantic Station. We did some fun shopping and saw the new Sarah Jessica Parker movie...

...and ate at Rosa Mexicano, which has the best guacamole in the world. Made tableside. And I don't even like guacamole.
On Sunday, we headed back to Birmingham. We stopped at The Shops of Grand River in Leeds (shameless plug: my company owns this) to look for Baby P some things...
to which she/he got some simple white onesies, some gender neutral sleepers, and a sweet little t-shirt that says "I love my daddy." Don't worry, it can work for a boy or a girl!

Mom and I had a wonderful time in Atlanta! We can't wait til next year when we will have a new little traveler with us!

Week 14

BABY P UPDATE!

I try to do these on Fridays, because that's when thebump.com tells me Baby P is a new size and what all it's doing in there (not much, just floating around pooping and wiggling and growing organs), but alas, last Friday was a little busy. I'll post on that in another post.

How far along? 14 weeks.

Baby Bump? It's there.

Maternity Clothes? LOVE them. But I need something yellow for a special event this weekend, and there are no yellow maternity dresses. I guess women don't want to look like a big ball of sunshine. I've got something I can wear instead that still fits.

Total weight gain: 5 pounds, as far as I know. I am NOT keeping a scale at home.

Cravings: This week it was cheddar and sour cream Ruffles chips. And I bought them and I ate them.

Symptoms: The headaches are so bad, I think I'm going to die.

Sleep: Off and on.

Movement: Not really any flutters this week. Mostly just stretchy cramps. Just reminds me that Baby P is growing. :)

Gender: Still feeling like it's a girl.

Belly Button in or out? In.

What I miss: Having a margarita at Rosa Mexicano this past weekend.

Best moment this week: Baby P got some clothes! More to come on that one...

Week 13

Yet another week has passed.

I really don't have a lot to blog about, besides a Baby P update.

Oh, and that I've discovered Pinterest and have become addicted.

It has made me a mad woman wanting to re-do and re-organize my entire house. I will keep you posted on how that works out.

How far along? 13 weeks.

Baby Bump? A little one! But definitely noticeable.

Maternity Clothes? LOVE them. I've been wearing my new pants Mom bought me last week all week. I sit down pretty much all day, and anything with buttons and zippers has gotten really uncomfortable. I may never wear regular pants again.

Total weight gain: 5 pounds, as far as I know. I am NOT keeping a scale at home.

Cravings: I don't really get cravings. More like somebody talks about some kind of yumminess, and I decide I want it. Right. Then.

Symptoms: The headaches are awful. I've literally had one since last Sunday. And I think I've got sciatica, so I've spent a few evenings on the heating pad.

Sleep: Off and on. Not getting up to pee or anything, but just waking up randomly.

Movement: I *think* I could be feeling some flutters, but it also could just be gas. Eh.

Gender: Still feeling like it's a girl.

Belly Button in or out? In.

What I miss: Having a day go by without some kind of something ailing me. And my favorite pair of shorts.

Best moment this week: Discovering maternity pants. Definitely.

Baby Love

I am in love with today.

It's my last Friday of summer hours at work, so I got off at 3.

We had Surin for lunch, where I indulged in some YUMMY sushi (cooked, not raw).

Ben passed his super hard Alabama law test.

When he gets done working today, we're headed to Dothan to hang out with Mom!

And yesterday...I got to hear our sweet baby's heartbeat once again.

It's so hard to explain that feeling I get when I hear it. You hear that whooshing sound going 90 to nothing, and the first feeling is relief. That baby I'm farming in there is ok.

The second feeling is excitement. Every time I hear it, I know that it's growing and getting stronger and healthier. God is knitting a miracle, and I am so lucky to be a part of it. Whoever this child is, I was chosen to be his/her mother.

Third, I get really, really nervous. I don't know what to do with a baby. What does a baby do all day long? I don't know. I don't remember that part of my life. And how am I going to teach it to be a responsible, contributing member of society? I'm not even sure I am a responsible, contributing member of society...All I've had is a dog. She gets bathed when she's stinky and food when she barks. Babies need a lot more attention than that...

How far along? 12 weeks officially.

Baby Bump? Yeh, that's starting to show up.

Maternity Clothes? Mom and I are going this weekend. My pants and skirts are getting tight and I am hating wearing them to work.

Total weight gain: Yesterday at the doctor, I have gained 5 pounds total.

Cravings: Still sandwiches. Anything bready.

Symptoms: I've only been really nauseous two days this week. I've got headaches and my lower back has been aching, but that could just be that I slept wrong.

Sleep: Still sleeping funny. I think I need a body pillow.

Movement: Still too little to feel!
Gender: According to old wives' tales, it's a girl because of it's really high heartbeat. But you never know. It could just be a feisty one. My mother, however, refuses to acknowledge that it could be anything else and is calling it a "her."

Belly Button in or out? In.
What I miss: Well, since it's football season, I've really missed a nice cold beer on gamedays. But I can handle not having that!

Best moment this week: Hearing that sweet heartbeat yesterday and being reassured that everything is ok and both baby and I are doing great!

RANDOM FACT ABOUT CHARLOTTE: She has now decided that she likes to dig. In the mornings, she runs around outside to get all of her bodily functions taken care of before being stuck in the house all day long. Yesterday and today, I have gotten completely ready for work, only to find her digging in a spot outside and covering her paws in mud. So both mornings, she has had to have a mini bath to rinse her paws. It made me 20 minutes late for my doctor's appointment yesterday because the couch also had to have a bath. She has NEVER done this before. She's going to the doggie hotel this weekend, so hopefully the yard will heal a bit before she gets back.

Rumor Has It

So, yes, we're pregnant.

I AM SO EXCITED.

I have had baby fever for about a year now, and at the beginning of the summer, Ben and I decided to "not try," but "if it happens, it happens." Famous last words.

Apparently, I got pregnant around the first "not try."

First clue: We were in DC over the 4th of July. Ben left a day early, and we were in a mall near the train station to have lunch. Ben and I obviously headed towards the Taco Bell line. While we were waiting in line, this overwhelming sense of, "OMG, I can't eat this" came over me. I thought I was just a little motion sick from the train.

Second clue: That Sunday was Ben's birthday, and I had a crazy emotional meltdown in the bed about Charlotte wallering all over me.

Third clue: Monday night, I was SICK. I could hardly lift my head up, was super nauseous, and ached all over. It was awful. Ben said, "I think you're pregnant. You're acting crazy."

Tuesday morning, I took a test before work. Digital. I didn't want to deal with the line junk. In about 3 minutes, I got my answer. PREGNANT. Big bold letters.

I immediately started to cry because I was so happy. Ben was still asleep, and I busted out of the bathroom door with the test. Charlotte fell off the bed, because I screamed, "WE'RE PREGNANT!!!!!!!" and scared her. Ben said, "REALLY???????"

It was a super sweet moment that I will never forget. And it was totally not the way I planned to tell him.

Stupid me didn't take any pictures. And I thought the reading on the digital test would last forever.

It doesn't.

I went to the doctor that Thursday and it was confirmed that I was about 4 weeks along and set a due date of March 23rd.

4 weeks later we had our first ultrasound. Baby P is a feisty one and had a heartbeat of 178 and is measuring four days ahead. We didn't change my due date because it was so close.

I don't have a scanner, or I would show you our ultrasound picture. It looks like a peanut laying on the left.

Now here we are.

How far along? 11 weeks and a few days. YAY FOR ALMOST BEING OUT OF FIRST TRIMESTER!!!!!!

Baby Bump? Only Ben and I can really tell. A few things I've worn have made people at work notice.

Maternity clothes? Already bought a few things in anticipation of fall/winter, but I don't need them right now. I did purchase a belly band that I have to wear with one pair of my jeans.

Total weight gain: At my 8 week checkup, I had gained 3 pounds. I go back on Thursday. I know I've gained more.

Cravings: Sandwiches.

Symptoms: Constant nausea, bloating, lovely stomach stuff. But all that is waning.

Sleep: I sleep fine, but I've found if I wake up, it's really, really hard for me to go back to sleep.

Movement: Still too little to feel!

Gender: I don't know, but I can't WAIT to find out so I can stop calling it an it. I know it's a something, we just can't see it yet!

Belly Button in or out? In.

What I miss: Eating like a normal person.

Best moment this week: Getting over my Mexican food aversion. Ben is so excited. I have deprived him for so long!!!!! He wants Moe's every day.

So, there it is. We are so very excited. I can't wait to meet Baby P!
